Surprise proposal in Amsterdam: Katie & Aj
On December 31th we got up at 4:00 and flew to Amsterdam to meet a guy named Aj, who was planning with us a surprise proposal. And it was really our most secret mission so far.
Aj is from Florida and he has been traveling with his girlfriend Katie around Europe. They both saw many European cities but guess which one is Katie’s favourite one? Charming, cute Amsterdam where we used to live almost five years ago and every visit of this city is deeply nostalgic for us. Especially warm oliebollen and a very specific Dutch smell. As the country is basically flat, you can smell cows eating grass 20 kilometres far away. Anyway, back to the main story.
We only knew how Aj and Katie look from Instagram and that they’re going to admire the beauty of Amsterdam from Oranjebrug exactly at 11:00. The only problem was, Katie had no idea about Aj’s secret plan and getting her out of the bed took some time and effort. At 12:40, after three walks around the area and one overpriced ginger tea, the couple finally appeared on the chosen bridge and we were tensely watching them like two stalkers with hope, we are not going to miss Aj’s one-knee proposal and Katie's "yes".
“I have been planning on proposing for a while, but could never find the funds to buy Katie the perfect ring. When we were home for thanksgiving I told my mom about it and she mentioned she had a ring that I could use, if it was going to be one that Katie liked. It was beyond perfect. It was the ring that my father had made for my mother that he used to propose. It’s a Gold ring with a Dark Blue, Princess cut Sapphire with a Trillion cut diamond on two sides. I had to keep this a secret for almost two months. That may sound like nothing but Katie and I are horrible at keeping surprises from each other.
Our trip was originally Munich, Salzburg, Vienna, but I decided to add Amsterdam as a surprise for New Years! It’s her favorite city and she was talking about how amazing it would be to spend New Years there. Thankfully Jakub and Jitka were able to meet us there to place the cherry on top and surprise her with the proposal. It was hard to coordinate because I could only message them when I had WiFi, but that was only at the Airbnb, or a select few places around town.
We planned for the spot and I now had to get Katie there without keying her in on what was going down. Thankfully she was eager to explore the town and didn’t hesitate. They met us at one of the bridges on the Northwest side of town and it went perfectly! Everyone says you get tunnel vision when it happens and we can attest that it’s true. I could hardly get my words out haha! But everything was exactly how I’d imagined it. We spent the next few hours with Jakub and Jitka, exploring and shooting in the city. They were extremely kind to bring us a celebratory bottle of champagne and create the most beautiful engagement video for us!”
It’s been an incredible experience for both of us and actually the best way, how to spend the last working day of the year. Many thanks to you guys for being so breathtaking and funny at the same time. We wish you the best and hope to see you again!
By the way, these two are super talented photographers! Check out their website August & Katherine Photography.
